Biofuel: A Sustainable Choice for Shipping
At Höegh Autoliners, we are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and promoting environmentally conscious practices within the maritime industry.
Type of Biofuel Used
The biofuel we bunker meets the requirements of RED II Annex 9A, Advanced Biofuel. This cutting-edge biofuel variety aligns with our commitment to sustainable practices and significantly contributes to reducing carbon emissions. Our fuel producers and the raw material used are certified according to the ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) standard, verifying that the biomaterial is RED II compliant.
Benefits of Biofuels
Biofuels, especially those derived from waste and advanced feedstocks, significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, making them virtually free of sulfur oxides. Their production from organic materials, such as waste oils, contributes to reducing waste and efficient resource utilization. With lower carbon intensity compared to conventional fossil fuels, biofuels release fewer carbon emissions per unit of energy, contributing to a cleaner and greener maritime industry. Furthermore, biofuels are compatible with existing ship engines and infrastructure, facilitating a smooth transition to more sustainable fuel options without costly modifications, and they have a positive impact on air quality by emitting fewer pollutants that affect human health.
Biofuel is an excellent choice for reducing greenhouse gas emissions
Biofuel offers impressive emission reduction benefits compared to traditional fuels:
- Well-to-Wake (WTW) Reduction: Biofuel provides an 85% reduction in carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions compared to conventional fuels.
- Tank-to-Wake (TTW) Reduction: Biofuel virtually achieves a 100% reduction in CO2e emissions
Contributing to a more sustainable maritime industry
In addition to powering our fleet, we supply biofuel to various partners:
- In 2022, we proudly supplied 2,242 MT of biofuel to two prominent automobile manufacturers.
- In 2023, our commitment to sustainability continued by supplying 10,377 MT of biofuel to the same automobile manufacturers, with several other projects in the pipeline expecting to further increase the biofuel supply in 2024.

With 1.8 billion young people worldwide, their voice and engagement are essential to fostering societies resilient to corruption. Today’s youth must be empowered to champion integrity within their communities and globally, equipped with tools and education that cultivate values of transparency, accountability, and justice. Corruption robs young people of educational opportunities, job prospects, healthcare access, and a stable environment. And it contributes to broadening the social and environmental challenges and differences that we all have an obligation to fight.
